Praise, like gold and diamonds, owes its value only to its scarcity.
Help celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Dr Samuel Johnson - composer of the first major dictionary of the English Language
Welcome
2009 is a big year for Lichfield and we're celebrating Samuel Johnson's birthday in style. If he was still alive, he'd be 300 on the 18th September, when party time in Lichfield will really kick off!
See below to find out about what we've got planned...
Events
From an evening with John Sergeant (of Strictly Come Dancing fame) in February, to an historic walk in March, through to a huge photo shoot for over 300 Johnsons in September, there’s loads going on
Rewrite the dictionary
Johnson's dictionary contained a whole host of weird and wonderful words. As part of the tercentenary celebrations, we've gathered together some of the more unusual words and are asking you to add your own definitions.
Your Quotes
Samuel Johnson was a quotable figure, and to celebrate this, we're gathering together local people's quoteable quotes and putting them into a book, which we will publish later this year.
